Mail Online broke its own records in May as an average of more than eight million daily browsers took its monthly total to nearly 130 million users.

Major stories such as the Woolwich murder and the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson spurred a five per cent month-on-month daily upturn.

That helped increase the total by eight per cent to 128.6 million, according to the latest ABCe figures.

The second-placed Guardian saw daily browsers drop slightly to 4.66 million, but it took in a new high of 82.9 million for the month overall.

The Telegraph suffered dips in both respects – a 6.17 fall in daily users to 2.85 million, with the total figure down 3.24 per cent on April to 57 million.

Elsewhere, the London Evening Standard reached a 200,000 daily average and a 20 per cent total increase to 4.7 million.

The Independent‘s website was up 9.71 per cent for a monthly reading of 26.65 million, leapfrogging the Mirror Group’s 26.27 million, despite the latter’s own growth of 4.64 per cent. The Sun stayed ahead of those two papers, with a 4.46 per cent upturn taking its May total to 29.9 million. Its daily average is 1.77 million.
